Do Plating and Painting Thicknesses Matter?

The dimensions on almost all drawings for machined components are assumed to be after plating. However, plating thicknesses generally only matter when machining parts with tight tolerances (<0.001″). Most plating processes only add a couple tenths or less (<0.0002″) of thickness per side. This includes chromate conversion, Type II anodizing, and electroless nickel plating. Measuring…

Anodizing Thicknesses

This is a bit of an oversimplification, but when a part gets anodized, the anodize layer forms halfway into and halfway above the original surface.  So if a drawing calls for 0.002″ of anodizing, then the part will “grow” in size by 0.001″ per side of the part.  For example, if a raw part is…

Deburring and Edge-Breaking

Deburring is the process of removing extraneous material leftover from machining. This material is not considered part of the design and cause a variety of issues if they come loose later. Issues may include plating voids, cosmetic paint imperfections, mechanical damage, or electrical shorts in some products. Burrs must be removed manually using various hand…

Mecha Robots

We’ve had this video in the “About Us” section for a while, but we thought it would be a good idea to highlight it here again to show one of our robots in action. We did all the machine integration ourselves, including the automatic door mechanism.

Rugged Chassis

Mecha specializes in making custom chassis for rugged computer systems. This part requires a lot of 5-axis milling and tolerances of better than +/-0.003″. It will plated and painted to MIL specifications.

Heatsink Fins

We make a lot of aluminum and copper heatsinks. Some of the parts take hours to machine, like these examples.

New 5-Axis Machine

We have been extremely busy lately at Mecha. Due to increased demand for our services, we’ve had to increase capacity. We’re running three full shifts, expanding our facility, and adding equipment. Our new Haas UMC-750SS was just installed, and it’s already loaded with work for the next several months!

A State of A-Fair-s

A long standing tradition here in NC is happening right now and is right up the road from us.  We don’t offer the fun rides and delicious food like at the NC State Fair, but we can certainly help with machining needs.
